「耶誕節」(Christmas)這名稱是「基督彌撒」(Christs Mass)的縮寫。彌撒是教會的一種禮拜儀式。耶誕節是個宗教節日，我們把它當作耶穌(Jesus)的誕辰來慶祝，因而為名。這一天，全球所有的基督教會都舉行特別的禮拜儀式。但有很多耶誕節的歡慶活動和宗教並無半點關聯，譬如親朋好友間交換禮物、寄耶誕卡，這都使耶誕節成為全球普天同慶的日子。
