In peacetime training, usually the pilot just has to do spot on landing before where the arresting wire will be located on the runway, but not lowering the arresting hook. As long as the pilot can land on the spot or before that on the runway, most of the time the arresting hook will work.
Don't know if there's any sort of requiring pilot to have how many arresting hook landing per X year training cycle, but that's not hard to do---that's how USN train their aviators on land first without using arresting hook. The downside of using arresting hook is just that most of the air force birds might have to go overhauling very soon if the airframe sustain X number of arresting wire/hook, unless the aircraft was originally designed for carrier takeoff/landing, like F/A-18, F-35C, and others..... |
